Sunday, Day 2, Hiking Adventure with Rachel, Daisy & Donna continued
Nice visit with Mary Jane who was in the deli the night before at 6 and then again at 6 am to open up. Turns out Mary Jane and her girlfriends participated in One Square Mile of Hope in Inlet! Click on the link to hear Mary Jane.

9N out of Westport to Elizabethtown and then 9 north to Poke-O-Moonshine and it’s only 7 am!
7:30 am and we’re at the registration book before climbing Poke-O!
Yellow is the color that comes to my mind when I remember Poke-O.
And still a lot of green leaves too.
Very user-friendly hike with lean-to and outhouse. AND internet!
As we ascended, visibility decreased.
Here’s the vital stats about this modest mountain:
- 2180 ft high
- 2 paths lead to the summit
- Peregrine falcons nest in the cliffs
- Has a firetower at the top
- Popular rock & ice climbing mountain due to proximity to I-87 & challenging routes
- View at the summit (on a clear day!) includes: Giant and Whiteface Mts; Lake Champlain; Plattsburgh; Montreal, Burlington, Green Mts of Vt.
Up and down in 3 hours. 10:30 and time to think about where to have lunch!
I’m a believer! In digital devices! Thanks to Rachel’s iphone and the Tom Tom we found our way on some of these back roads and we saved a lot of time by calling a restaurant first to see if they were open or what time they opened. After Poke-O we wanted to have lunch at Dogwood Bakery in Wadhams but a phone call there said they’re open only Thurs-Sat this time of year.
We had always wanted to eat at Chair 6 in Lake Placid. Rachel called. They were open. We were on our way! It’s a tiny place but the food is good. Lovely visit with the servers too. One of them, another Rachel, recognized Rachel’s flaming tomatoes on her car in the parking lot and immediately turned into a testimonial for Rachel’s Elixir. I had to videotape her!
It was raining all during lunch and hadn’t subsided when we ventured out to the car after paying the bill. So we decided to go to the movies. Into the Woods was playing, starring 2 old codgers- Robert Redford and Nick Nolte- who decided to hike the Appalachian Trail. A bit unrealistic but it was warm and dry and the seats were soft.
Next stop Sticks and Stones in Schroon Lake for dinner. Can you tell we really like eating out! Wood-fired pizza….yummmmm! Co-owner Steve also noticed Rachel’s flaming tomatoe on her car and struck up a conversation about Bloody Marys and her elixir. You never know where your next customer is coming from!
Overnight in Schroon Lake at Starry Night Cabins because they accept dogs. However, there was no no internet unless you stood outside. But Daisy was happy & comfy!
Stay tuned for the third and final installment. Day 3- Pharaoh Mountain.
